MEET ADAM GEE: THE NEW HEAD OF MASTERSCHOOL

We are thrilled to announce that Adam Gee will be joining us as the new Head of Masterschool, ushering in an exciting new chapter for our longest-standing training programme. With his leadership, Masterschool will embark on a transformative journey into the future of factual producing, extending our core territory into the realms of emerging business models, digital-first content, creative application of AI and enhanced global outreach, evolving our approach to factual production and distribution.

Prior to joining the award-winning London documentary-specialist independent production company Doc Hearts, Adam was a Commissioning Editor at CAA (Creative Artist Agency, L. A.). His 20-year commissioning career also includes being a long-time Commissioning Editor at Channel 4 and the first Commissioning Editor of original programming at Little Dot Studios (on ‘Real Stories’ documentary channel). In addition he commissioned documentaries across a range of genres at Red Bull Media House and consulted on short form online documentary for Ridley Scott Creative Group. He specialises in documentary, short form and online video, multiplatform factual production, digital content and diverse talent development.

He has won over 90 international awards for his productions, including an Emmy, 6 BAFTAs, 3 Royal Television Society awards and the Grand Award at the New York International Film & Television Festival. He has also won the Media Guardian Innovation award and the RTS Innovation award. Adam has served on BAFTA’s Television and Interactive Entertainment committees, and is a voting member of the European Film Academy. He has taught at the Royal College of Art, the National Film & Television School and NYU. He is an Honorary Fellow of NUA (Norwich University of the Arts) “for services to the UK Broadcast and Interactive Media industry”.

As well as being steeped in documentary storytelling, Adam has been a pioneer in multiplatform factual production and digital-first content. He sees this as a timely handover of the Masterschool baton as it is a point of inflection for the industry and its underlying business models. “Film and TV are never going to snap back to how they were. But when edifices crumble, gaps open between and that’s where the future lies. There are spaces in the digital realm where you can feel a real creative fizz at the moment and they offer huge potential, global and local, mainstream and niche, for where factual can and is progressing and finding its newest forms and models. Moving forwards the Masterschool will build on what it already does so well, to reflect the realities and opportunities of how things are evolving in the world of factual production.”

Documentary Campus Managing Director Donata von Perfall said, "For 24 years, the Masterschool has been a cornerstone of training for factual producers, nurturing some of the brightest talents in the industry. This marks the beginning of a transformative era for the Masterschool, one that embraces the opportunities of a rapidly evolving digital landscape while continuing to inspire and empower the next generation of factual storytellers."
