CPH:CONFERENCE
CPH:CONFERENCE is a 4-day long programme presented in partnership with the renowned international documentary film festival CPH:DOX. Together we are thrilled to be offering a range of inspiring talks with visionary thinkers, investigating current themes in documentary filmmaking and creating an interactive and hands-on platform for exchange with other professionals of our documentary community.
This year's Conference kicks off in the mornings with filmmaker talks exploring the intersections of film with art, science and society in A MORNING WITH. The afternoons will present a range of sessions and thought-provoking discussions under the BUSINESS AS UNUSUAL banner, covering topics from storytelling to financing and producing and all the way to the question of what we define as success in filmmaking. We will close on Friday, April 1 with a call for action in the CLIMATE STORYTELLING session addressing all artists and urging effective storytelling about the climate crisis.

A Morning With
The mornings at CPH:CONFERENCE will be dedicated to storytelling, craft, and creative dilemmas of documentary filmmaking at the intersection of art, science and society. Each morning will feature a thought-provoking conversation of two filmmakers in this year’s CPH:DOX competition programme. The role of leaders nowadays and the themes of access and risk will be discussed by Daniel Roher (Navalny) and Christoffer Guldbrandsen (A Storm Foretold); Sara Dosa (Fire of Love) and Lars Ostenfeld will delve into innovative storytelling and the intersection between science and documentary filmmaking; the interconnection between past and present and their relation to memory will be explored by Sierra Pettengill (Riotsville, USA) and Nataša Urban (The Eclipse). The sessions will be moderated by Wendy Mitchell, Screen International’s Contributing Editor.

Business As Unusual
Curated by AC Coppens and The Catalysts, the afternoons at CPH:CONFERENCE will give access to unheard voices and explore new strategies for the documentary community. The programme of Tuesday, March 29, will unravel the themes of ownership of the story and creative collaborations, bringing up among others a case study of Sundance awarded The Territory (Alex Pritz). New opportunities of film funding will be explored on Wednesday, March 30 by innovators in the field including European equity investors Elisa Alvares (IPR.VC) and Sigrid Dyekjær (Real Lava), as well as the Head of European Commission’s Audiovisual Industry and Media Support Programmes Unit Lucia Recalde. Metrics of success and sustainable career, including basic universal income for artists and other bold ideas will be discussed by filmmakers and industry representatives incl. Mandy Chang (Freemantle), Jason Ishikawa (Cinetic Media), Aisa Villarosa (YBCA) and Stephano Mendelek (Beirut DC) on Thursday, March 31.

Climate Storytelling: From Impact to Art + Art to Impact
Presented by Doc Society’s Climate Story Unit, a special programme on Friday, 31 March will explore the art and impact of climate storytelling. Artists and climate experts will engage in discussion on how to document and communicate this moment in history and the possibilities of documentary filmmaking to cross political and cultural divides and resonate powerfully with audiences, inspiring them to take action.
Session 1: Come and hear from our recruiters; leading movement leaders & climate strategists and join the discussion about the critical ideas we need to seed into the popular culture, the moments we need to pay attention to in international negotiations and the law courts. Listen, participate and get inspired about how creatives can document and communicate this moment in history. Media. Recruiters include: Tessa Khan, Founder of Uplift; Selma de Montgomery, Danish youth activist as featured in CPH:Dox 2021 opening film, 70/30; Nicky Hawkins, Director of Communications of On Road Media & author of Six Ways to change hearts & minds on climate change and Rune Baastrup, Community builder and Director of Deltager Danmark.
Session 2: Learn more about four climate stories, join a rapid fire brainstorming session to help accelerate their journeys towards impact – strategise around change goals, target audiences and the partners they will need on the journey. Participants include: Cecilia Nessen & Nathan Grossman from B Reel Films (makers of I Am Greta); Julie Lunde Lillesæter, Natalya Search from Differ Media (makers of Thank You For The Rain) and Clara Lopez (director of Hacking Justice) and a participant in this year’s Documentary Campus Masterschool. Experts include: Malinda Wink, Global Director of Good Pitch; Danielle Turkov Wilson from Think-Film Impact Production and Patricia Finneran, Executive Director of Story Matters.
