CPH:DOX Talk - Plurality in Non-fiction: What`s at Stake in the Age of Mainstream?
As a teaser for the four-day industry event CPH:CONFERENCE 2023, which will take place from 20-24 March in Copenhagen, Denmark, we are kicking off the season with a panel at the EFM Industry Sessions at Berlinale.
The pandemic brought about a rise of a new, streamers-led environment with algorithm-driven programming which prioritises smooth, commercial projects. In the fight for audiences, all the parties of the production and distribution chain - including public broadcasters - are now more than ever reluctant to take risks. With all the production chain tied to distribution, what are the consequences of this tendency? Do producers and distributors of ambitious independent creative documentaries such as 2023 Oscar nominated "A House Made of Splinters", or Annecy International Animation Film Festival's hit "Aurora's Sunrise" see financing and sales opportunities for similarly rich, artistic expressions in the upcoming future non-fiction market? What role do entertainment studios, festivals, distribution outlets and platforms play in securing a space for richness, variety and artistic freedom of the non-fiction genre?
