The Happiest Chief

Malawi, a small African country, ignored by the world until May 2016 when it suddenly became first-page news. Local chief Theresa Kachindamoto did something very courageous. She dissolved more than 850 forced child marriages. Suddenly in July 2016, a certain Eric Aniva was arrested, having publicly admitted to having deflowered more than 100 young girls, some as young as 12,during an initiations known as “cleansing”. He was also HIV-positive. On November 17 he received 2 years prison for engaging in "harmful cultural practices". Theresa Kachindamoto raised her voice, claiming that the Courts should have considered the plight of the violated girls before handing down the sentence. This is her story.
