Guardians of the Shining Light
Guardians of Shining Light is an interactive webcomic that raises awareness about oral cancer in South Asian communities, where the disease accounts for a significant percentage of cancer diagnoses. Despite nearly 90% of cases being preventable through early detection, low awareness and cultural normalisation of smokeless tobacco contribute to high death rates. Using rich cultural narratives, it transforms the battle against tobacco addiction and oral cancer into an epic journey, highlighting the dangers of smokeless tobacco and the importance of recognising early signs. Through a mobile-friendly, interactive experience, users are educated on preventive measures, while real-world testimonies make the content emotionally impactful and culturally resonant. The project tackles misinformation, addresses harmful cultural practices, and empowers communities to recognise early signs of oral cancer, aiming to drive behaviour change and ultimately save lives.
About Zainab's research:
Zainab is pioneering solutions to address the growing crisis of oral cancer. Drawing from her experience as a dentist serving rural communities, she personally witnessed the devastating effects of the disease. This inspired her to pursue solutions, leading to a Master's in Dental Public Health and a Ph.D. Collaborating with 27 international experts, Zainab has created an affordable screening toolkit designed for the prevention and early detection of oral cancers. Additionally, she developed a mobile app that facilitates training, data collection, and the integration of health systems. Zainab also co-founded the BALLANCE cancer network, a collaborative platform that brings together global researchers to combat oral cancer through capacity-building, information exchange, and mentorship programs.
